Circumstances change, we can be in situations where we are new to the area, need to return to work, welcoming a new baby when you were getting ready to send the last on off to college! As a mom of three of have I have personally gone from suddenly working full-time to home alone with a baby, from being the youngest mom to the oldest mom, from being a mom of an infant to a mom of an adult. Each change, each child brought on different worries and different needs. However, though it all the need to connect with other moms was consistent and a life saver.

Below is a list of the best ways I have connected with other moms. You may find that depending on your situations and your children, you may be active with more than one type of group on organization. Take time to visit and learn about these groups to find your best fit.

Meetup.com

Description: Meetup  is a online network of groups organized by interests and locations. The site allows groups to communicate and organize activities. Members can post suggestions, start discussions and RSVP to events. The site allows you to map directions, export event info to your calendar, and offers iPhone and Android apps for you tech savvy moms.

Review: I was amazed by how many types of organization you can find on this site. I especially liked how I could find mom groups based on children’s ages, exercise related, working moms, single moms etc. all with in 10 miles from my home! You will find that most moms groups will provide general descriptions of the club and and activities.

Joining: A Meetup account is free; however, depending on the group there maybe membership fees. You can join and track multiple groups though your meetup account. As you discover groups, you can ask to Join the group or contact the group coordinator for more information. In many cases you will be contacted and invited to a public activity or general meeting to ensure all around safety. Once you decide to join and your membership is approved you will have full access to their Meetup site including calendar and membership.

MOMS Club®

Description: MOMS Club stands for MOMS Offering Moms Support.  It is an International, non-profit support, non-denominational group designed for stay-at-home mothers either full or part-time. Activities are scheduled during the daytime with opportunities for monthly moms night out and or something for the entire family.

Review: I have met some amazing women through through this group. Chapters are organized according to zip codes or school zones insuring you will meet other moms and kids in your neighborhood and who attend the same schools. Activities are suggested and hosted by members. Typical events include playgroups, field trips,  scrap and craft dates, cooking club,  book club, walking club, etc. Depending on the chapter you may even have babysitting coops and meal trains.

Joining: Each local chapter sets their dues. Typically, they are between $20-25 per year. To join, find the chapter (see MOMS Club Chapters) in your area, and contact the chapter directly.

MOPS

Description: MOPS, Mothers of Preschoolers, services the needs of moms with children from birth to kindergarten. Chapters are chartered through local faith based organizations , and adapt to fit the size and “personality” of the group’s members. They offers several types of groups: Classic MOPS, Teen MOPS, Military MOPS, MOPS@, and MOMSnext. MOPS is open to all mothers of preschoolers and encompasses women of different backgrounds and faith. Groups meet on a weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly basis. Meeting schedules and times are set by each group. Childcare through the MOPPETS program is provided allowing members to focus on group presentations, discussions, activities, and mentoring.

Review: After attending the first meeting, I wondered why I waited until my last child to join this group! Unlike playgroup oriented clubs, MOPS really focuses on you as a mother. Group meetings allow you to take well deserved time out to talk with others moms, ask for  practical advice, and to find strength through prayer and scripture.  The topics and materials provided by the national organization are timely and poignant.

Joining: There is both a international and local membership fee. Registration for MOPS International is $23.95. You  receive a one-year subscription to MOMSensemagazine, Mom-E-Mail messages and other benefits. Local registration fees vary group. MOMSnext

Description: MOMSnext, a MOPS group, caters to mothers of school aged children to provide support and community for the new challenges and issues that arise. The MOMS next group are based on the same fundamentals as MOPS. Depending on the membership, groups will meet either during the day or evening, and may offer childcare.

Review: I was so thrilled that a MOMSnext group was started in Virginia Beach. As a mom with preschool, school aged, and adult children, I am constantly switching gears, and needed a different kind of support and community in addition to what I was already getting.

Joining: MOMSnext is a recent initiative of MOPS. There is both a international and local membership fee. Current international members will not have to register twice. Local registration fees vary group. To find a local group (See Find MOPS Group).
